| | Sarabande Books, Inc. was founded to publish poetry, short fiction, and literary nonfiction, genres which increasingly have trouble finding a place in the for-profit publishing world. Sarabande established itself early not only as a showcase for exceptional literary works, but as an educational resource for writers and readers. We regularly conduct readings and workshops in publishing and creative writing at high schools, universities, libraries, and bookstores. We offer two literary contests, the Kathryn A. Morthon Prize in Poetry and the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction, judged by well-established writers. It is important to Sarabande that we make ourselves as accessible as possible to writers and readers. Therefore, we acquire manuscripts by several means: the literary contests, an open submission season in the Fall, a call for Kentucky manuscripts in July, and letters of invitation.
Sarabande publishes 10 titles a year; these books are distributed to libraries, schools, and bookstores across the United States. We estimate that 70,000 adult readers of all income levels and ethnicities will, at some point, come into contact with a Sarabande title. In addition, our biannual, educational newsletter, The Sarabande Insider, reaches an audience of some 8,000 readers. We consider ourselves an "author-oriented" press and are committed to producing beautiful, lasting editions that honor good writing, and we aim to keep our books in print. Sarabande titles are distriuted by Consortium Book Sales and Distribution.
We have had previous internship experience referred from Yale, University of Michigan, U of Louisville, Bellarmine College, and St. Francis high school over the past 10 years.

| Description: | Interns are expected to work between fifteen-to-twenty unpaid hours per week. In return, Sarabande offers rare and comprehensive exposure to the independent publishing business, in a friendly, congenial atmosphere. An intern leaves with job experience, literary education, and a good reference for his or her resume. Hours can be adjusted to fit students' schedules.
At Sarabande, interns are exposed to a wide variety of experiences, including routine administrative work, monitoring author/student internet chats, research into specific market areas, and answering press correspondence.
Intern activities include, but are not limited to: answering phone and general e-mail; responding to contest guidline requests; helping with the mailing of galleys and review copies; reading and responding to usolicited manuscripts; personalizing rejection letters; proofing of manuscripts and publicity materials; data-basing; assembling press kits for the marketing director; errand running to the Post Office, Kinko's, etc.; attending monthly staff meetings, and offering input on art-work for book covers.
The position is unpaid, though we offer a bonus if the intern performs well. Likewise, a car is not required, but would be useful.
Mileage is not reimbursed. Housing is not available.
